Frederick Reads

Frederick Reads is a partnership among Frederick County Public Libraries and dozens of local organizations to foster a love of reading. This celebration is an opportunity to share an imaginative journey together through the pages of significant books. Join us as we explore a wide range of great reads, culminating with author visits, signings and special events throughout Frederick.

Our diverse picks include fiction, non-fiction and poetry, covering topics related to history, societal issues, culture, sports and much more. As we delve into themes within the books themselves, our cultural partners often expand upon these themes through a variety of venues. While wide-ranging, all Frederick Reads book selections share a common purpose, which is to provide a platform for broad exploration of multi-faceted issues that spark productive conversations in Frederick and beyond.

Past Frederick Reads guest authors have included Elizabeth Gilbert, Cokie Roberts, Frank Deford, Greg Mortenson, James Swanson and Clyde Edgerton (who debuted a musical based on his novel while here!).  In 2012, we welcome Rebecca Skloot, Robin Oliveira (in conversation with Cokie Roberts); and Diane Ackerman, among others. Most author events are free, underwritten by our partners as a gift to the public. Hotels and restaurants often offer special rates in support of Frederick Reads so literature lovers from afar can join the locals.

Events take place at our public libraries, college campuses, theaters, restaurants, art galleries and in many living room book club meetings.  Please join us! Bring your ideas, critiques, and respect for many points of view.

Events For 2012

In 2012, Frederick Reads examines the theme of Medicine and Miracles, taking a look at how medicine can inspire and inform us, while also recognizing that not everyone benefits equally from its forward momentum.

Frederick Reads has chosen a slate of authors whose books touch on these issues in a variety of genres—from a lyrical memoir about a stroke by poet Diane Ackerman, to a narrative exploration of medical ethics by Rebecca Skloot, to a historical Civil War novel by Robin Oliveira.

Through the prism of these book selections, we hope to spark constructive conversation about a topic that affects us all. On behalf of the committee, I invite you to join us!
